"Up There" is a song featured in the film, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, which was sung when Satan wishes he could go up to Earth.

Background

It is among the more dramatic and sorrowful songs of the film. While most of the songs are upbeat and comical, this song contains sad, dramatic lyrics and a slow sad tune. It also focuses on the inner struggle of a main character, as opposed to the other songs, which usually focus on a character's personal prejudices. It is, ironically, sung by Satan.

The song is later reprised during the "La Resistance" medley.

Trivia

  • The song is a parody of "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid
  • The song's Les Misérables counterpart is "I Dreamed a Dream"; both show the inner struggle and aspirations of a character.
  • In the movie, the song's pitches are different to that on the soundtrack. The soundtrack version also features an improved recording of the vocals.
  • This is the only song in the movie that doesn't contain profanity.
  • This is the only song not to show any South Park inhabitant.

Lyrics

Sometimes I think, when I look up real high
That there is such a big world up there
I'd like to give it a try
But then I sink
'Cause it is here I'm supposed to stay
But I get so lonely down here
Tell me why's it have to be that way?

Up there
There is so much room
Where babies burp and flowers bloom
Everyone dreams, I can dream too

Up there
Up where the skies are ocean blue
I can be safe and live without a care
Up there

They say I don't belong
I must stay below alone
Because of my beliefs
I'm supposed to stay where evil is sown

But what is evil anyway?
Is there reason to the rhyme?
Without evil there can be no good
So it must be good to be evil sometimes

Up there
There is so much room
Where babies burp and flowers bloom
Everyone dreams, I can dream too

Up there
Up where the skies are ocean blue
I can be safe and live without a care
Live without a care
If only I could live up there

I wanna live
I wanna live up
Ooh baby, ooh
I want to live up there
