Trivia

  • This is the first episode where Mr. Garrison is shown as a teacher for the kindergarten class.

References to Popular Culture

  • The whole concept of sending someone to the past to get rid of a robotic enemy is a reference to the Terminator films.
  • When Trapper Keeper fuses with Cartman it becomes a gigantic blob with his head as a reference to the popular anime film Akira. In addition, the music during these scenes is similar to the music when Tetsuo mutates beyond control. The scene where Rosie O'Donnell is absorbed is a parody of when Tetsuo accidentally kills his girlfriend, Kaori (down to the very detailed bloodflow scene that finalized the event).
  • "VOTE IKE!" is a reference to Dwight 'Ike' Eisenhower.
  • The phrase "We are Trapper-Keeper. We are one." resembles the greeting of the Borg in Star Trek.
  • Mr. Garrison's B-story parodies the contentious United States presidential election of 2000 between George Bush and Al Gore.
  • When Stan, Kyle, and Kenny are in Cartman's house and try to get into his room Cartman replaces the Dawson's Creek song with his own lyrics; "Screw you guys screw you guys screw guys screw you guys".
  • The scene where Kyle is floating on the inside of the massive trapper keeper is an homage to HAL 9000 of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
  • While BSM-471 is telling the story of what the trapper keeper does in the future, "I Don't Want to Wait" is heard in the background. This is the theme to Dawson's Creek.

Continuity

  • Cartman says, "I don't know dude, I'm not supposed to have male friends that are over thirty; I kinda got screwed on that one", which is a reference to the events in "Cartman Joins NAMBLA".
  • After Cartman chases down Bill Cosby (BSM-471), Kyle says, "Damn! I thought fourth grade was gonna be different". This is a reference to the previous episode when they realized during Ms. Choksondik's aesop that fourth grade will be just the same as third grade.

Kenny's Death

  • When the trapper keeper hybrids with Cartman, Kyle and Stan both call "not it!" to break down the door. When Kenny rushes the door, though, Trapper-Cartman smashes the door against the opposite wall, crushing Kenny in between.
