Bloody Mary "Bloody Mary/Trivia" "The Return of Chef/Trivia" "Smug Alert!/Trivia" Smug Alert!

This page contains trivia for "The Return of Chef". Remember, trivia must be factual, provable, and it is always best to cite your source for not-so-obvious trivia. If you would like to dispute a trivia point, please discuss it in the talk page.

Trivia

  • Chef's voice is composed of audio clips of his voice from various episodes purposely spliced up poorly. This is intentional to make him sound out of his mind, as Isaac Hayes quit after allegedly being offended by the episode "Trapped in the Closet" which mocked Scientology, a religion he is a member of. Hayes died in 2008.
  • The speech given by Kyle at Chef's funeral appears to be influenced by Trey and Matt's negative feelings towards Scientology as well as Hayes' departure.
  • This and "Smug Alert!" feature end credits after the Braniff splash ad.
  • This is the last appearance of Chef (apart from his appearance in the crowd scene in the title sequence). From the next episode onwards, his appearance in the crowd scene is replaced by Darth Chef. Although Chef technically survived his "death", the fact he has not appeared at all is most likely out of respect to Isaac Hayes, who died two years after leaving the series.
  • Elton John, Kathie Lee Gifford, Ike Broflovski, Terrance and Phillip (who are weeping), Timmy Burch, Jimmy Valmer, Liane Cartman, Butters Stotch, Mrs. McCormick, Stuart McCormick, Principal Victoria, Janet Garrison, and Kevin McCormick make cameos during Chef's funeral. Strangely, Thomas and Nelle McElroy (Chef's parents) are not present at all.
  • Even though Chef was permanently killed off in this episode, he can still be briefly seen during Cartman's verse in the intro up to the Season 11 episode "The List".
  • When Stan and Kyle say "Oh my God! They killed Chef!" "You bastards!" respectively, it's done in the same manner as done with Kenny's deaths.

References to Popular Culture

  • Darth Chef was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz in reference to his role in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace as the voice of Darth Maul.
  • Super Adventure Club member William looks like Mick "Crocodile" Dundee from the Crocodile Dundee films.
  • There's a map at the Super Adventure Club with some Latin written on it: "Quid ei potest videri magnum in rebus humanis, cui aeternitas omnis, totiusque mundi nota sit magnitudo. Cicero". Translated, it means something like this: "For what human affairs can seem important to a man who keeps all eternity before his eyes and knows the vastness of the universe? Cicero".
  • The screen on which William shows Chef being brainwashed to the boys is labeled as "Fony", a reference to a famous Japanese electronics company Sony.
  • The picture of the founder of the Super Adventure Club appears reminiscent of Theodore Roosevelt who went on several exploratory adventures during his lifetime, including the American west, the Amazon, the Alps, and an African safari.
  • A picture in Dr. Neeland's waiting room depicts Lucy van Pelt (of Peanuts) and the running subplot in the popular comic strip of her offering her friends psychiatric help.
  • Chef being resurrected into Darth Chef is a reference to Anakin Skywalker wearing the life support armor, and becoming Darth Vader from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

Continuity

  • Stan says "Chef was our fuh...f-ffriend", similar to the way he did in the episode "Kenny Dies", when he said "...But... he's our... fu... fufu- friend.." after learning that he might die.
  • Chef's last role before this episode was "Die Hippie, Die".
  • The Peppermint Hippo which was previously seen in "Lil' Crime Stoppers", is a parody of the strip club Spearmint Rhino.
  • Chef craps his pants when he dies, a reference to the season eight episode "Something Wall-Mart This Way Comes", where it is established that the last thing someone does before they die is crap his or her pants.
  • When William Connelly is explaining how having sex with underage children makes people immortal, the sentence "THIS IS WHAT SUPER ADVENTURE CLUB ACTUALLY BELIEVES" appears on screen; this is a callback to the episode "Trapped in the Closet", where a similar heading appears during the explanation of the beliefs of Scientology.

Goofs

  • When the boys and the Super Adventure Club are trying to convince Chef which side to join, the man behind the leader of the Super Adventure Club lowers his hands, but his gun stays where it was.
  • The floor of the Marsh Residence is colored a bright yellow as opposed to a light brown as seen in other episodes.
