Main article: List of Episodes

Season Five began on June 20, 2001. It contained fourteen episodes where the first half aired during the summer and the second half airing near winter. It finished on December 12, 2001.

The season continues with the "4th Grade" opening from last season. It would be the last season to air the opening until it was replaced with a country-style opening with new animation in Season Six. The season features the premier of two new characters, Jimmy Valmer and Towelie. The season also features the "permanent" death of Kenny McCormick in "Kenny Dies" and the preparation of Butters Stotch becoming a major character in the finale episode, "Butters' Very Own Episode".

This is the first season not to feature a Christmas episode.

This season contains two of the episodes considered the most dramatic in the series, "Cartmanland" and "Kenny Dies", which depict Kyle becoming deeply depressed, let down, and giving in to an illness, nearly killing him, and Kenny developing a muscular disease, forcing his friends to cope with his approaching, "real" death.
