Trivia[]

  • Butters, in this episode, is the first of the boys to masturbate and ejaculate semen, indicating he prematurely started puberty. This later becomes a joke in "Sarcastaball", although strangely, Butters forgets what semen is by that time.
    • In the commentary for the episode, both Trey Parker and Matt Stone said that they feel like Butters probably lied about ejaculating due to his age.
  • When the boys enter the room where the boss of the Peppermint Hippo is, you can hear him say: "Alright, so we'll have to start having the McCormicks make our meth again", ironically implying that the boys, in fact, do know the said boss indirectly.
  • The boys are seen naked in this episode but their penises are not shown. Kenny is only seen from the back.
  • If you listen closely when the boys are in the showers, a fart noise can be heard.
  • This is one of the many times the boys imagine themselves as something fictional or something that requires them to be older, other times being in The Black Friday trilogy, The Coon Saga, businessmen in "Go Fund Yourself", a talent agency in "Wing", and Ninjas in "Good Times with Weapons" and "Naughty Ninjas".
  • When the boys visit the police station, a man can be seen in the background that looks like a clean-shaven Harrison Yates.
  • In the creator commentary, Trey and Matt mention the inspiration for the episode came from their childhood, as they both played junior detectives. They also mention:
    • The second half episode, where the boys get their badge and then immediately sent out to bust a narcotics ring, was partially animated first before realizing they had material to give them a backstory on how they got their badges.
    • They both mention that they were surprised that they were allowed to show the scenes of Mr. Farnickle disposing of his wife's mutilated body parts.
    • The episode came out when the forensics crime drama CSI was gaining popularity.
  • What Mr. Farnickle supposedly did to his wife (bludgeoning her to death, dismembering her body, and dissolving the remains in an acid-filled bathtub) is very similar to what real-life serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer did to his victims.
  • Kyle's badge has a six pointed star on it, a reference to his Judaism.
  • This is the only time Kenny's original hairstyle from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is seen from the side, most of it is covered by Cartman.

References to Popular Culture[]

  • The name of the strip club in this episode is The Peppermint Hippo which is a play on an actual chain of strip clubs in the U.S. and U.K. called the Spearmint Rhino.
  • The flashbacks experienced while the boys describe the crimes are similar to those in the forensics crime drama series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
  • The episode uses many of the tropes commonly used in cop films such as:
    • The scene where Cartman is shouting at Butters, while Kenny comforts him, is a demonstration of the Good cop/Bad cop method of interrogation.
    • Lt. Dawson berating the boys accusing them of being "loose canons" and threatening to demote them, while stating the mayor is on his ass for all the damage caused by them.
    • Dealing with crooked detectives who are on the bad guy's payroll.
    • Conflicts over jurisdiction from federal agencies.

Continuity[]

Goofs[]

  • When the police make the boys "junior detectives", their badges say "junior deputy".
  • In the locker room, when Kenny takes his hood down, the hood disappears entirely.
  • When the boys are in the locker room, Cartman's hat switches on and off between several shots.
  • When the boys receive their first dollar and turn away from the door, the dollar bill in Stan's hand is clearly shown from the back. As Stan is about to say "Wow, look you guys, our first dollar", the camera zooms in and the dollar bill is now shown from the front.
  • After the boys receive their first dollar, the camera zooms into the dollar in Stan's hand. The next shot shows the dollar framed on a wall. The dollar on the wall has a different serial number than the one shown in Stan's hand. (This error was corrected in the remastered Blu-ray version)
  • Even though Butters is at Cartman's house masturbating for most of the episode, his hair can be seen in the background of Mr. Garrison's classroom during the lesson on the Feminist Movement.
  • When Murphy puts his hands down while explaining his involvement while in the strip club, his hands are switched.
  • Kenny is nowhere to be seen when the boys are in the shower.
  • The calendar in Lt. Dawson's office has only 24 days.
