Trivia[]

  • This episode is a parody/statement of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans.
    • The dam breaking and causing massive flooding may also be a reference to the levee failure in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
    • The line "George Bush doesn't care about beavers" from one of the townspeople is a reference to a claim made by rapper Kanye West regarding President George W. Bush and his slow response to the hurricane. While presenting during the live broadcast of A Concert for Hurricane Relief on NBC, West went off script and into a rant about the media's portrayal of blacks in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, followed by the claim that "George Bush doesn't care about black people." [1]
    • A few white people and one black person can be seen standing on their roofs in Beaverton, but when the Army helicopters arrives, they only rescue the white residents. This may be a reference to accusations of racism by the Bush Administration, as many of the poor black residents who remained in New Orleans were stranded on their roofs for days while waiting for military helicopters to rescue them. [1][2]
    • The townspeople blaming global warming, George Bush, communists, Chinese radicals, terrorists, and Al-Qaeda for the flood references the shifting of blame for the disaster and the slow response that followed on federal, state and local agencies, as blame was shifted between President Bush, FEMA Director Micahel Brown, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. [3][4]
  • This episode premiered on Trey Parker's 36th birthday; October 19, 2005.
  • The Crab People theme plays in the background after they are accused of being responsible for the flood, and several people looking around for the source of the music, implying it could be heard by the characters and not just the audience.
  • This is one of the few episodes where Cartman and Stan are joined together and primary focus without Kyle, Kenny, Butters or another friend.
  • Liane Cartman does not appear in this episode and no one shows concern that Cartman is missing. This also goes for Kenny McCormickJimmy ValmerStuart McCormickCarol McCormick, and Ike Broflovski.
  • When the people of South Park are fixing the television in Park County Community Center, a part of Russell Crowe's show "Fightin' Around The World" is seen.
  • Randy Marsh states that the temperature outside will fall to over 70 million degrees below zero. In reality, the lowest temperature possible is −273.15 degrees Celsius/-459.67 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The claim that one of the last stages of hypothermia is a feeling of being too hot is a reference to a real phenomenon known as "Paradoxical Undressing".
  • Nurse Gollum is briefly seen running out of the school screaming along with all the other kids and other staff members. In South Park: The Stick of Truth, it is shown she went missing during the events of this episode (there is a missing poster of her in the police station) . She is later replaced by a new nurse in "Ass Burgers".
  • This is the first time that the company name "Moovit!" appears in South Park.

References to Popular Culture[]

  • The people of South Park one-by-one saying, "I broke the dam," is a reference to the 1960 film Spartacus wherein the slaves each say they are Spartacus to hide his true identity.
  • Much of this episode - including the title - satirizes the 2004 disaster film The Day After Tomorrow. Among the references are:
    • Stan's near-underwater phone call.
    • The expedition to retrieve the children.
    • Randy drawing on the Government's map of the US a line where the people need to evacuate to the southern U.S. states before it evolves into a penis.
    • The townspeople running from global warming and shutting the door on it just in time.
  • The scenes of global warming "attacking" South Park are a parody of generic shots from second rate disaster movies.
  • The camera view of global warming chasing the townspeople before Randy shuts the door on it parodies the projectile camera technique used by director Sam Raimi in his film such as The Evil Dead.
  • The boat that Stan and Cartman operate, "Roy's Royce" is a play on the expensive line of luxury cars Rolls-Royce.

Continuity[]

  • The Crab People are blamed as a cause of the Beaverton Flood. They were last mentioned in "Quest for Ratings".
  • Randy has twice before been called on as the leading scientific mind in South Park. The first was "Spontaneous Combustion" and again in "Die Hippie, Die".
  • Cartman claims to have an uncle Roy at the start of the episode. However, Stan has already met all of Cartman's extended family in "Merry Christmas Charlie Manson!". In fact after they crash the dam and Stan tells them not to panic and tell his Uncle Roy, Cartman admits he doesn't have an Uncle Roy and the boat is just "some guy's boat I knew about!"
  • One of Mrs. Garrison's breasts is damaged in this episode and leaks its contents. The damage done to the breast can be seen again in "Go God Go", where one of her boobs is smaller than the other.
  • Russell Crowe Fightin' Around The World can be seen for a brief instant when the TV at the community center is being changed to the news.
