  • This marks the first of many battles South Park's parents fight to protect their children.
  • After hearing of Kyle's mother's disdain over Terrance and Phillip, as well as her intent to get them off the air, Cartman remarks that Kyle's mother has these sort of episodes around once every month, hinting that her outrage could be linked to her menstrual period.
  • This episode, according to Trey Parker, was the model for the film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.
  • Both Stan Marsh and Kyle Broflovski's mothers are referred to as "Carol" in this episode.
  • A "Mr. McCormick" is depicted in this episode being flung into the Cartoon Central building. Matt Stone and Trey Parker state in the commentary for this episode that 'that just happens to be another man with the last name McCormick, it's not Kenny's dad. Kenny's Dad wears a scotch hat"
  • Terrance and Phillip had different-sounding voices in this episode. Phillip sounds more like Terrance, and vice-versa. Also, their movements appear more restricted than in later episodes.
  • When Sheila Broflovski demonstrates a Terrance and Phillip cartoon clip, Randy Marsh is the only person who's laughing. His love of the Terrance and Phillip cartoon was shown again in Clubhouses. Although in South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut he is shown protesting against Terrance and Phillip with the others. This may have been merely for Sharon Marsh's benefit, however.
  • Stan makes a reference to "Volcano" when he tells Marvin that he can't kill him, for he "can barely hunt a deer".
  • In this episode, Terrance is voiced by Trey Parker and Phillip by Matt Stone. All subsequent episodes, however, reverse this, so that Terrance is voiced by Stone and Phillip by Parker.
  • Terrance and Phillip came about when Matt Stone and Trey Parker kept getting complaints about South Park only being about fart jokes.
  • Eric Cartman's original line when Liane Cartman tells him about Kyle Broflovski's mom banning Terrence and Phillip was "Kyle's mom is a dirty Jew!". On Comedy Central, the last two words were bleeped out. On the video and DVD release, however, only "dirty" was bleeped.
  • Cartman's line "Just because your mom's a bitch doesn't mean the whole world has to suffer!" foreshadows the events of South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.
  • This episode marks the first appearance of Sheila Broflovski's catchphrase "What what what?!" upon hearing something that shocks her.

References to Popular Culture

  • Stan's favorite show Terrance and Phillip is a partial parody of popular adult themed cartoon Beavis & Butt-Head. The title characters of this series often sat on their couch and would exchange fart jokes and other toilet humor.
  • When debating the subject of assisted suicide, Kyle mentions a guy named "Jack Laborkian" who "goes around and murders people who asks him to, and he doesn't get in any trouble at all." Kyle is referring to pathologist Jack Kevorkian who subject of controversy in the 90's for his involvement in nearly 100 assisted suicides between the years 1990 to 1998.
  • Jesus not wanting to "touch" the subject of assisted suicide with a "sixty foot pole" is most likely a comment on the Catholic belief that in most cases assisted suicide would be considered a sin.
  • The Cartoon Central TV network is an obvious parody of Comedy Central, the TV Network that airs South Park.
  • Mrs. Broflovski demands more "quality" television like the TV show Full House.
  • The song that Stan's grandpa forces him to listen is "Gonna Fly" by Toddy Walters, a parody of Enya's "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)".
  • Bowing down to protests, Cartoon Central replaces Terrance and Phillip with She's the Sheriff starring actress Suzanne Somers.

Goofs

  • In the beginning of the episode, where the cake is shown on the table, it is there one moment, then after it zooms in on Marvin Marsh it's gone, only to be back after Stan proclaims that it's 8 o'clock.
  • After Terrance asks Phillip to pull his thumb and he farts, Stan laughs in Kyle's voice. Also, when Kyle suggests watching porn, Stan says, "Cool!", in Kyle's voice as well.
  • When Grandpa Marsh tries to kill himself with a shotgun while Stan is watching TV, he shoots a picture frame. But after he yells out "Damnit!" due to his failure to kill himself, the shotgun is missing.
  • When Cartman punches Kyle in the classroom, Token's desk is not in front of him. But when the scene turns to Clyde, Token's desk is in front of Cartman.
  • When Sheila Broflovski goes to turn on the TV after Terrance and Phillip gets cancelled, the bottom part of the TV is missing.
  • When the TV store has a scene where Terrance and Phillip are in outer space, they both have American flags on their chests, not Canadian flags.
  • There are 77 candles on the cake. Due to symmetry (many are seen on both sides) there would be 100. Grandpa Marsh is 102.
  • When Death is just about to kill Kenny, Kyle's jacket goes through his collar, like in Chickenpox.

Continuity

  • When Stan's Grandpa wants Stan to kill him, Stan says "I can't even kill a deer", this is a reference to the episode, "Volcano".
  • When an ill Kenny asks to use the restroom in this episode, he uses a restroom set inside the classroom, which was never seen previously and has not been seen since.
  • In the episode City on the Edge of Forever (Flashbacks) the boys remember when Death tried to touch Kenny, but Kenny grabbed him and threw him to the floor to jump on his body. Kyle then said "Oh my god Kenny killed death." "You bastard?" which said by Stan and Kyle respectively. Then Kenny eats some ice cream out of Death's robe. This is however not how it played out.
